20 Week Ultrasound

We had our halfway ultrasound a few weeks ago for #2. We decided once again not to find out the gender. Pete would really like to know and so would I actually, but I always think back on how awesome it was the moment Ollie came out (and good motivation for labor too)! Even though it takes so much willpower, the anticipation itself was pretty fun. I also got some enjoyment out of torturing people a little bit when they asked what we were having and we didn't have an answer. Plus, when you don't know, less people ask you what you are going to name the baby, which for us was a tough question to answer.  I'm also hoping for a less traumatic delivery this time around so I can be there (rather than in the O.R.) when our families meet the baby. I'm looking forward to seeing the look on their faces when they meet the little love and find out if its a boy or girl.

The baby wasn't in great position for photos, but they did manage to capture a profile of the head and there's also a cute shot of baby's little foot. Can't wait to meet you in September little one!

April/May

We had a bit of a rough go once we got back from Europe. I was surprised how quickly Ollie started to adjust back to Vancouver time, and just when we were getting back on track, he ended up with a tummy bug. This resulted in the worst Oliver week I have ever experienced (which says a lot considering what a grouchy newborn he was). Ollie only threw up a couple of times, but he had a terrible case of the runs and ate nothing for a week. His sleeping/napping went right out the window as he insisted to be held or touched at all times and would scream bloody murder if we put him down or left the room. The poor little guy dropped weight so quickly and he was lethargic (until you left him alone to sleep that is) and grumpy and just not himself. Pete and I were of course exhausted and felt so sorry for Ollie, but our patience with his touchy moody behavior was wearing thin. Luckily, just when we thought we would break, he got better......

And since then he has not stopped eating. Our little man has his sweet (yet wild) disposition back as well as his chubby body. Oddly enough, he has also stopped trying to walk since he got better. He was balancing on his own and walking really well between people for weeks, and now, he just doesn't seem interested. I don't know if it is because he put on weight, or if he's scared or what. He has always been a little late with his milestones so I'm not worried and just enjoying the last moments with my crawling baby. I am slightly worried that he might skip walking entirely and just start running everywhere....

He is so smart and learning things so quickly. If you're still reading at this point and feel like continuing, here is a list of his latest tricks:

*Nods yes and no (and will even shake his head no as he's reaching for something he knows he shouldn't have).

*He can tell you where his (and your) nose, ears, eyes and head are.

*He says mama, dada, hot, up, whats that and I think he even says mine (yikes!).

*He is truly a Canadian boy and it is already clear that he LOVES hockey. He always enjoyed the Giant's game during the season and now when he sees a game on TV, he giggles and squeals with joy. He also claps his hands and roars (literally) with the crowd. Hilarious.

*He still loves his books and toys. He even rolls his cars around just like your average boy and can finally scoot along on his retro race car

*Besides his parent's (grandparents and aunties and uncles too), Ollie's greatest loves are his blow up pool at Gramma and Grandpa's. His water table on our patio. Bubbles (and watching Ernie chase/eat them). Getting pushed around at high speeds on his little tractor (Ernie of course joins in this game and jumps on too). Other kids.

We also recently had pictures done to mark his 1 year birthday. I put a new one at the top of the blog, but here are some more good ones... (Thank you once again to Joshua Tripp Photography)

He has already mastered the art of making funny faces.
Such a little tease.

1 Year Appointment and Ollie goes to Europe

Poor Ollie had a MISERABLE experience at his 1 year doctor appointment. I thought 4 shots seemed like a lot, and while he did hate them... I think he hated it more when the doctor was examining him, looking in his ears and measuring his head. He generally likes people, but I think the doc was too close for Ollie's comfort. While I totally forget what his head circumference was- his weight was 24lbs/2oz and his length was 31.75 inches. He dropped from the 95th percentile to the 75th percentile in weight, but he is holding steady in the 95th percentile for height. No surprise there.

Shortly after coming home from the appointment, Ollie took a monster nap and woke up feeling warm. He had a fever the rest of the afternoon and just generally wasn't himself. He napped more and was pretty grouchy. He pepped up every couple of hours after we gave him Tylenol- but I was seriously worried because we were leaving for Europe the next evening.

The fever carried on all night and we took him into the doctor the next morning. The doc told us to postpone our trip- and we were about to cancel until an hour before we had to leave for the airport. By then, Ollie was acting more normal, his fever had lowered to about 99 and we knew it was only a reaction from the vaccine. So in a whirlwind, we packed up, cleaned up and high tailed it to our flight. We made the check in cut off by 3 minutes. It was meant to be. The flight went really well, except that O's fever got up to 102.9 at one point, and I seriously doubted my parenting judgments. But we kept on with the Tylenol and made it to London 8.5 hours later, relatively unscathed all things considered.

We didn't have much planned for the trip except that we were going to Lisbon first thing the next morning. We spent 3 lovely days in Lisbon and then took a train south to a small town called Tavira. While we were in Tavira we rented an apartment which was great, because by then Ollie had FINALLY broken his fever (it lasted for 4 days along with a rash) and we were able to create a more homelike routine. We thought we would stay and explore the south of Portugal for at least another few days, but our nomadic travel habits got the best of us and we decided to finish off the rest of our trip in Seville, Barcelona and Paris! Our flight home was from London again so we figured we would spend an afternoon there as well. Pretty ambitious for just a week left of travels.

Anyway, we did it. And we even squeezed in a pretty cool visit to Disneyland Paris where Pete completed a lifetime achievement goal of visiting every Disneyland in the world. LOL. (I just have Tokyo left- but that was my second visit to the one in Paris.) It was hard at times and it was a whole lotta work (subways and strollers do NOT mix- except maybe in London), but I am so glad we went. Ollie had his moments like most kids, but I think he was the biggest trooper of us all. We always said we wouldn't stop traveling when we had kids. Well, we haven't and we certainly proved ourselves right. Our lives our richer for it and Ollie has some pretty cool photographs to look back on. I am so proud of all of us and happy to report that we will travel on. Next time though (whenever it may be) we will have 2 kids in tow....

Ollie is 1

Our baby boy is 1 today. It's been a whirlwind of a year, and even the early days of his life that seemed to never end now feel like a lifetime ago. I'm overwhelmed by the passing of time, but I'm also relieved to have hit this milestone. Just like everybody promised, it got easier and more fun. Oliver is our joy and it's amazing to see the little person he's growing into. I can't help but feel sad knowing that those helpless baby days are behind us, but I know there is so much more in store for us to look forward to as a family. Pete continues to amaze me as a father. Oliver absolutely adores him and it is heartbreakingly sweet to watch the two of them. He is endlessly supportive of me and I am incredibly thankful that we are partners in this together.

So.... Cheers to Oliver on his special day! And thank you all for your kind words, love and support all year long.

Lately and Oliver is 11 Months

So, it's March already. Last year at this time things were moving much more slowly as we were waiting for our little person to show up. I can't believe he'll be one next month. And I'll be 30. I'm not sure which one breaks my heart more ;)

We have a lot going on around here these days. We will be moving into our new house (hopefully) in May or early summer. I'm trying to get our condo organized and ready because we need to sell it soon. The hockey season is winding down. Pete will be at work everyday until March 15th... the last home game of the regular season. The Giants didn't make the playoffs- but that's ok, it'll be nice to have him working normal M-F 9-5 hours until August/September when it starts all over again.

Ollie is a busy little bee these days. The only time he stops moving is when he's sleeping. He will hardly drink a bottle without simultaneously doing something else as well. He's more of a swig and go kind of guy. He does a pretty good job sitting in his high chair and eating along side us... usually watching 'Gangnam Style' or a video of Disney's Tiki Room on YouTube. He'll be working those iPads better than us before we know it. Everything else with the little guy is pretty much status quo- in a good way. My favorite new thing is that he is so affectionate lately. Ollie has always loved to be held and carried around, but now he is actually snuggling up to us and hugging and kissing us on purpose. It's so cute. He loves exploring and taking in new things. He still knows what he wants and is extremely stubborn/vocal/determined to get his way.

Oliver has the 8 teeth he's had since he was 8 months. He has been a bit grouchy lately and his gums look quite puffy and red in the back but nothing new has popped through yet. Sleeping has seemed to reach a new level of greatness (knock on wood). It was pretty good since about 6 months, but I feel like now I can usually count on sleeping through the night about 90-95% of the time even when his schedule gets thrown off. When he wakes up at night, it's generally a quick fix with a bottle then he's back out again. He pretty much sleeps from 7:30pm to 7:00am. Even his naps have improved, but I think the days of his morning nap are almost behind us. Waaaaaaaa! :(

Otherwise we are just looking forward to warmer weather, our new house and April birthdays. Things are good and I certainly can't complain!

10 Month Photos

Look at our sweet smiley guy!

10 Months

OOOPS! I had his 10 month blog post sitting in here for about a month now and I guess I forgot to hit publish. I found it as a saved draft. I'm also currently working on his 11 month post which I will put up in the next few days along with the 10 month pictures I can't seem to find. Anyway... here's what Ollie was like just a month ago. Not much has changed :)

Ollie is 10 months of pure little boy madness (in a good way of course!). There isn't much he doesn't do these days besides walk and talk. He's changing so quickly all the time that I can't even tell you what he does new or different than before. Basically he is mastering all the skills he's been working on since about 5/6 months and building on them. He can also do things when you ask him (like wave and give kisses) and he always seems to know what you are asking of him. He is an old pro at pulling up and he's starting to let go more and more. I think we are still a ways away from walking, but he could surprise me. It was like this with rolling over and crawling too- I kept thinking he was just days away, but then it would take him several weeks to a month to actually do it. And that is just fine. He is pretty much moving at an average baby pace as far as developmental milestones go.

He is still very chatty. His favorite thing to say these days is 'dada'. Still. It has been that way for quite a few months now. He even picks up random objects or toys and holds them to his ear like it's a phone and says 'dada, dada'! He also points and says 'dat' or  what sounds to me like 'looooook' or maybe it's 'booook'- he does LOVE his books. So much so he even tries to read them to me :) He is also figuring out how to match objects with their correct shapes. For so long he just chewed on those toys but now he is actually matching up circles with circles (and square with squares etc.) and trying to push them through the holes.

We manage to keep busy from day to day and music class is still very much the highlight of Ollie's week.  I'll probably pick back up with swim once he turns 1. And he'll be 1 in just two short months. Unbelievable.

I weighed him in early January and both Ollie and Ernie were 24 pounds. I'm guessing he'll be just under 30 by his first birthday. His gain has slowed down quite considerably and he is slimming out and growing taller more than anything. He is amazingly beautiful both inside and out, and it is so fun to see his personality shining through every day. He has always been strong willed and opinionated and it just becomes more evident with each passing day.
